 VIRUDDHA AHARA- DEADLY DELICIOUS




 Viruddha Ahara is a unique concept described in Ayurveda. Viruddha Ahara referred in terms of food-food interactions, food processing interactions. 

Ayurveda clearly defines that certain diet and its combinations, which interrupts the metabolism of tissue, which inhibits the process of formation of tissue and which have the opposite property to the tissue are called as Viruddha Anna or incompatible diet. The food which is wrong in combination, which has undergone wrong processing, which is consumed in incorrect dose, which is consumed in incorrect time of day and in wrong season can lead to Viruddha Ahara which thus causes ill effects in body leading to diseases. 

Some common examples of viruddha Ahara;

1. Desha Viruddha;consumption of alcohol in desert land.

2. Kaal Viruddha :-  consumption of spicy pavbhaji and masal-pav in summer.

3.Agni Viruddha:-consuming Churmura (popcorn etc.) in excessive hungry condition.

4.Matra Viruddha:- Cow’s Ghee + Honey in equal proportion. 

5. Saatmya viruddha;Chinese food by Indians.

6. Dosha Viruddha :-Curd mixed with rice for skin disease.

7. Sanskara Viruddha :-Reheating Food items - French Fries, Reheating 

oil which is used once, Heated Honey

8. Veerya Viruddha:-  Fish with Milk. 

9. Krama Viruddha:- Sweet Dishes after meal. 

10. Koshtha Viruddha:-Barbeque food and baked food consumed by person 

who is habitual to Constipation. 

11. Awastha Viruddha:-  Alcohol consumption by Laborers. 

12. Parihara Viruddha :Cold drinks after Samosa 

13. Paak Viruddha :- Half baked - Half fried egg 

14. Upachaara Viruddha :- Drinking cold water after steam bath. 

15. Samyoga Viruddha; Strawberry milkshake, Banana milkshake

16. Hrut Viruddha :- Consuming food items which not pleasant to your mind-Bitter melon, Decoctions for Children. 

17. Sampat Viruddha;fruits which haven’t fulfilled their original taste or damaged taste or over ripped. 

18. Vidhi Viruddha:- Not consuming food which is hot and fresh food from Lunch box

So, one should have proper understanding of all the types of viruddha Aahara to avoid consumption of Incompatible dietary articles of today’s fast food era.

Avoid food combinations, including:

  • Milk is not compatible with fruits, melons, sour fruits, and bananas. It should not be consumed with salty items such as samosa/paratha/khichadi. Don’t boil it with tea.
  • Grains should not be consumed with Tapioca and Fruits.
  • One should not consume fruits and milk with vegetables.
  • Beans are the wrong combination with eggs, milk, fish,  fruits, yogurt, and meat.
  • Yogurt is to be avoided with cheese, hot drinks, sour fruits, milk, mangoes, nightshades, beans, eggs, fish.
  • Fat and proteins are mismatched foods as they need different digestive juices.
  • Cheese cannot be paired with eggs, fruits, hot drinks, milk, beans, yogurt.
  • Proteins are not compatible with starches and their collective consumption may result in delayed digestion.
  • Nightshades (tomato, potato, etc) are not compatible with fruits like cucumber, melon, and dairy products.
  • Milk, yogurt, tomatoes, and cucumber are incompatible with lemons.
Ayurveda suggests a long list of wrong food combinations. The list can guide you towards bad choices of food. By abandoning these bad combinations, you can avoid fermentation, indigestion, and putrefaction.
